What is the Rotational Molding Design Process?
The rotational molding design process begins with learning about the final application and functionality of the products. The product design is a creative development process to convert an idea or concept figuratively and quite literally in the form of a sketch, description, data, video, etc. The design is broken down into exterior design and structure design. The considerations of exterior design include such as size, shape, color. While considerations like material, fabrication, strength are needed to be scientifically calculated for the structure design. Both designs are required to satisfy the functional and aesthetic requirements of the products.
The design of a new plastic product to be produced by the rotational molding process the same as designing a product for any other materials and processes. But this is not enough, it is required to involve the products engineering experts with rich technology and experience. They know exactly about the material, rotational molding tooling and process. The team of designers and engineering experts closely control the design for manufacturing (DFM) process to ensure the functional requirements of the product are met.
The rotational molding process offers highly flexibility in design and manufacturing, yet it accordingly requires lots of design consideration in every aspect of shape, structure, appearance, function and manufacturing process.
-
Geometric shape
The dimensions such as length, width, height, diameter, radius, radian, slope and inclination are required to be precisely detailed.
-
Structure design
Structure design includes wall thickness, uniformity, concave and convex surfaces, shrinkage tolerance, holes and slots, threads, reinforcing ribs, inserts and etc.
-
Exterior design
Color, finishes, molded-in logo and graphics, interiors, textured surfaces, etc.
-
End-use environment
The requirements such as environmental adaptability, ergonomics, the easy of application.
-
Design for manufacturing (DFM)
Draft angles , demoulding direction, combination method and quantity of moulding, parting surface, wall spacing, fillet radius, insert position, etc.
