Rotomolded Plastic Speaker Enclosures are Widely Used in Professional Applications
A single pieces rotomolded plastic speaker enclosure, made in sturdy polyethylene, fully UV protected, can effectively withstand the extreme climatic condition. They are used in a wide range of professional indoor or outdoor applications thanks to their high strength, impact resistance, wear resistance and other fantastic quality levels.
Material advantage
Moldable plastic materials offer designers more flexibility to achieve aesthetic and technical goals. To achieve an optimum engineered design for a more precise or “focused” soundstage, the drivers’ acoustic centers should be acoustically aligned, which is especially beneficial in the vicinity of the crossover frequency. The molding of a tweeter horn/waveguide is a useful tool to control directivity, increase sensitivity, and provide for the time alignment of the acoustic centers of the woofer and tweeter in the crossover band. Elegant contouring can avoid the sharp edges that cause diffraction for smoother response. None of this is easy nor cheap with wood construction. Moreover, plastic is virtually impervious to water and resistant to many chemicals. The material of choice for rotomolded plastic speaker enclosures manufacturing is polyethylene because of its excellent impact and chemical resistant properties.
Compared with speaker casings made of traditional materials such as metal, wood, and ceramics, rotomolded speaker casings are lighter and easier to carry, making them portable for uses outdoors in sports fields, on the beach, and other occasions.
Rotomolding advantage
Rotomolding offers a great solution to produce waterproof and weatherproof speaker enclosures. In rotomolding process, plastic powder is poured into the cavity of the mold. The mold placed in an oven. While being heated, the mold is slowly rotated on two axes. The plastic is melted and gravity is used to stick the plastic to the tool inner walls and build up the correct thickness, then the mold is removed from the oven and slowly cool to prevent warpage. After fully cooling, tool is opened and the part removed for the next cycle. Rotomolding is ideal for making large hollow or concave shapes. Finished parts are stress-free and seamless, so they're strong with high strength and impact resistance. Rotomolding utilizes all material placed in the mold so that no waste is created. Another important feature associated with rotomoled speaker boxes is that the rotomolding process inherently creates thicker corners and edges which advantageously provides for greater impact strength in these critical factors.
Rotomolding is able to create the shapes and features that are impossible to achieve with other manufacturing methods. Plus, rotomolding can produce strong, hollow products in a range of sizes. The rotomoling tooling cost is relatively low in comparison to injection molding.
