Types of Rotational Molding Molds
The rotational molding mold is simple and is lightweight. Generally, molds consist of two pieces. In order to discharge the gas formed in the mold cavity and prevent the product from deforming, vent holes are provided in the mold. Rotational molding does not require high strength of the mold material, but it must have good thermal conductivity and be able to withstand the stress alternation during frequent heating and cooling processes. There are three common methods to make molds in rotational molding industry.
Cast Aluminum Molds
Featuring excellent thermal conductivity, aluminum casting molds are suitable for products with high precision requirements and very complex structures. The surface can also be treated with a variety of textures to enhance the look and feel and artistic quality of the product. Cast aluminum molds are mostly used in the production of lampshade and outdoor furniture.
2. Sheet-metal Molds
Sheet-metal molds is used for making large parts with relatively simple shapes contours. This type of mold is fabricated from cold-rolled steel plate with good elongation, and suitable for most products, especially plastic parts with low requirements on appearance size accuracy and surface texture, such as traffic safety facilities and water tank.
3. CNC Machined Molds
CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) machining is a highly precise and efficient method used in the manufacturing of rotational molding tools. This type of rotational molding mold offers very tight tolerances and consistency. It is used for the products with complex designs and specific surface texture.
This method allows for a high level of detail in the finished product. The precision of a machined aluminum tool also is very high, making it the ideal choice for projects that require high accuracy.
Other types of rational molding mold include electroformed molds, epoxy molds, vapor formed molds, and composite molds with jacketed heating elements
